ISKANDAR PUTERI, 2 January 2025 – Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), a joint venture between Malaysia based MMC Group and Netherlands-based APM Terminals, achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first container terminal in Malaysia to handle over 12,253,309 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in a single year for the year 2024.

This remarkable achievement surpassed PTP’s previous record of 11.2 million TEUs set in 2021, further solidifying PTP’s position as Malaysia’s leading and largest transshipment hub.

PTP Chairman, Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh, expressed immense pride in this accomplishment, stating, “2024 has been nothing short of extraordinary. It is gratifying to witness how PTP has risen to the occasion, embracing challenges with courage and transforming them into opportunities for growth and innovation.”

“Our record-breaking performance underscores PTP’s indispensable role in global supply chains. This milestone is a testament to the dedication, resilience and hard work of the entire PTP team.” “By seamlessly handling such substantial container volumes, we have consistently delivered exceptional services to our valued customers and partners, contributing to Malaysia’s economic growth and reaffirming PTP’s position as one of the world’s most efficient and high-volume container terminals,” he said.

Echoing the Chairman’s sentiments, PTP Chief Executive Officer, Mark Hardiman, remarked, “What is particularly rewarding about this achievement is our ability to maintain stable and strong productivity levels, even amid surging volumes. This stability is crucial and adds significant value for our customers. It has always been our commitment to help our customers achieve their schedule reliability, especially during a time of global supply chain disruptions, and we are proud to deliver this with no congestion.”

“Our goal is to sustain this momentum and achieve even greater milestones in 2025 and beyond. We have made extensive preparations for the future, focusing not only on port asset upgrades and infrastructure enhancements, but also on advancing our environmental, social and governance (ESG) agenda, strengthening safety policies and driving our digitalisation strategies. These efforts ensure continuous improvements and expansions as we anticipate significant increase in volume in the coming year,” he added.

“Our journey has not been without its challenges, but these trials have strengthened our resilience and determination. PTP’s success is rooted in our unwavering focus on our people, technology and processes, with safety as our core value and our customers at the heart of everything we do.”

Mark Hardiman also expressed his gratitude, stating, “As we embark on 2025, let us reflect on what we have achieved together. None of this would have been possible without the support of our customers, partners, shareholders, and very importantly, our dedicated staff, who should take pride in what they have achieved.”

The 12 millionth TEU was recorded at about 7.00 pm on 23 December 2024, marking a defining moment in PTP’s history.

The year 2024 has been a record-breaking one for PTP. On 22 September 2024, PTP achieved an exceptional 14,036 quayside moves within a single 12-hour shift. In July 2024, PTP achieved its highest monthly milestone, handling 1,115,181 TEUs. These achievements are part of a sustained performance that saw PTP handle over one million TEUs per month for seven months since May 2024.

In December 2024, PTP successfully implemented Kaleris’ Navis N4 4.0 container terminal operating system, a key upgrade to support future volume growth while maintaining operational excellence. PTP is now ranked as the fifth most efficient container port in the world, according to the Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) 2023 by The World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence. PTP is also ranked 15th among the world’s top container ports in terms of volume throughput, as highlighted by Lloyd’s List.
