PORT OF TANJUNG PELEPAS EXPANDS CAPACITY WITH NEW QUAY CRANES

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PTP INKS AGREEMENT WITH MITSUI E&S CO., LTD. TO PROCURE 48 SINGLE-LIFT ELECTRIC RUBBER TYRE GANTRY (E-RTG) CRANES

Kontena Nasional Berhad received 30 units of Volvo’s FM440 6×2 T RAS prime movers from Volvo Trucks Malaysia in a fleet expansion and modernisation move.

ISKANDAR PUTERI, 30 September 2024 – Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), a joint venture between MMC Group and APM Terminals, has taken another significant step in its expansion plans by signing an agreement with Sany Marine Heavy Industry Co Ltd for the purchase of four new quay cranes.

These new cranes will sustain and increase PTP’s capacity, supporting its growth plan, adding to the port’s current fleet of 58 quay cranes.

The signing ceremony took place at PTP, where PTP’s Chief Executive Officer, Mark Hardiman, and Sany’s Chief Executive Officer, Jeff Fu, inked and exchanged the agreement. The contract also included an option to purchase an additional four SPP quay cranes from Sany in the near future.

This agreement followed closely on the heels of PTP’s procurements of 11 quay cranes earlier this year to bolster operational capabilities, in which six cranes were also purchased from Sany in February 2024.

PTP’s Chairman, Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh, remarked that the procurement of these state-of-the-art cranes marks a pivotal moment in PTP’s continuous efforts to deliver premier port services, while reinforcing its standing as Malaysia’s leading transshipment hub and a key player in the regional maritime industry.

“These new cranes will significantly elevate and strengthen PTP’s handling capacity, enabling us to efficiently accommodate mega vessels, boost overall cargo throughput, and provide superior service levels to our customers, ensuring the smooth flow of trade,” he said.

Meanwhile, Hardiman highlighted that this acquisition forms an essential part of PTP’s broader strategy to modernise its equipment and maintain unparalleled operational efficiency.

“Their addition allows us to handle peak periods and heavy cargo volumes with greater efficiency, resulting in quicker vessel turnaround times and overall improved operations. This leads to smoother and more predictable outcomes for all stakeholders, while maintaining the highest safety standards.”

“This development signifies a major step forward in PTP’s steadfast dedication to prioritising both safety and customer satisfaction by providing shippers and consignees with more reliable and timely services through enhanced terminal efficiency and expanded capacity,” he said.

These new cranes are expected to arrive by early 2026.

PTP has set a remarkable new record in July 2024, handling 1,115,181 TEUs in a single month without experiencing any congestion. This achievement is particularly noteworthy as it marks the port’s sustained performance of handling over one million TEUs for three consecutive months, beginning in May this year. Additionally, on 22 September 2024, PTP surpassed its own record with an impressive 14,036 quayside moves within a single 12-hour shift.

PTP has also been recognised as the 5th most efficient container port in the world, according to The World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence in the latest Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) 2023. The port currently ranks 15th among the world’s top container ports in terms of volume throughput.
