ISKANDAR PUTERI, 12 March 2024 – Port of Tanjung Pelepas Sdn Bhd (PTP), a joint venture between the MMC Group and APM Terminals, along with the Johor Port Authority (JPA), distributed supplies for the new school year to 170 primary and secondary underprivileged students within Gelang Patah, Johor on 11 March 2024. The students were all selected from the adopted schools under PTP’s sustainable Corporate Social Investment (CSI) education initiative, Back-to-School Programme 2024.
The school supplies, consisting of a variety of eco-friendly items such as pencil boxes, water tumblers, lunch boxes, jute bags, and many more were handed over to representatives from the 13 Primary Schools and 4 Secondary schools by YB Datuk Pandak Ahmad, Member of the Johor Legislative Assembly (ADUN) for Iskandar Puteri, during a handover ceremony held at PTP.
During his speech, Pandak highlighted that while the Johor State Government plays a crucial role in social wellbeing, it also recognises that corporations have a significant responsibility to contribute back to the communities they impact. By actively engaging in Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) initiatives, businesses can address crucial social and environmental needs, fostering a more equitable and sustainable future for all.
He stressed CSR goes beyond charitable acts and is an essential element for a sustainable and thriving Johor.
Mark Hardiman, PTP Chief Executive Officer highlighted the fact that PTP has been conducting their Back-to-School programme for more than 16 years, in collaboration with many local parties such as Johor Port Authority and Johor Bahru Education Office; to deliver necessary assistance and ease the burden of the needy in the communities that surround PTP.
“PTP focuses on three key areas: education, environment, and community development to uplift the lives of our surrounding communities. Under the education initiatives for example, today’s Back-to-School Programme is aimed at helping the students have a positive back-to-school experience by equipping them with essential supplies. We hope that all the children will have a brighter start to the school year in 2024.”
“The incorporation of eco-friendly school supplies given to the students this year is also aligned with PTP’s sustainability agenda where education and environmental responsibility go hand-in-hand. That is why we are thrilled to launch our Back-to-School Programme featuring eco-friendly and sustainable school supplies,” he added.
In a statement to the media, Dato’ Monaliza binti Suhaimi, General Manager of Johor Port Authority stressed the idea of port as a community builder. This idea is being realised through CSR programmes including education initiatives, environmental conservation efforts and community development projects.
“As a Government agency, JPA recognises its responsibility to contribute to the wellbeing of the surrounding communities. By actively engaging in CSR activities, we embrace the Madani principles of integrity, compassion, sustainability, and excellence.”
Meanwhile, one of the recipients of the school supplies, Nur Ariff Mustaqim bin Sood from Sekolah Kebangsaan Sikijang, was grateful as he collected the school essentials after the handover ceremony.
“This new backpack and all the supplies will be such a big help for the new school year. It takes a lot of pressure off my parents, and now I’m even more excited to get back to learning,” said Nur Ariff Mustaqim.
