ISKANDAR PUTERI, 5 August 2024 – Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), a joint venture between Malaysia-based MMC Group and Netherlands-based APM Terminals has set a new record by handling 1,115,181 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in a single month – all without experiencing any congestion.
This new record follows PTP’s previous high of 1,077,747 TEUs set in May of the same year. It not only makes PTP the first port in Malaysia to achieve this feat backto-back, but also reinforces PTP’s status as one of the leading maritime and transshipment hubs, both regionally and globally.
“Our ability to achieve this record-breaking performance without any congestion solidifies PTP’s role as an indispensable link in the global supply chains,” said Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh, PTP Chairman, conveying his deep satisfaction with reaching this milestone despite the challenging global shipping environment.
“By seamlessly managing such substantial cargo volumes, we also demonstrate our capacity to consistently deliver exceptional service to our valued customers and partners, while contributing to Malaysia’s economic growth.”
Significant port congestion across different continents and regions has become a global issue, resulting in substantial delays in vessel schedules and serious disruptions to global supply chains. This has led to increased costs and inflationary pressures, affecting not only ocean container carriers and ports, but also end consumers. The congestion is primarily attributed to militant attacks on commercial vessels, known as the Red Sea Crisis, which has forced shipping liners to reroute ships via the longer route around Africa for safety.
“PTP’s pursuit of sustainable growth is demonstrated through our significant emphasis on port asset upgrades and infrastructure enhancements. These efforts align closely with our environmental, social and governance (ESG) agenda, safety policies, and digitalisation strategy. This approach has enabled PTP to navigate global congestion challenges effectively while allowing for continued improvements and expansions,” said Mark Hardiman, PTP Chief Executive Officer.
Mark Hardiman expressed immense pride in achieving this unprecedented operational milestone, surpassing all previous records.
“This achievement is particularly noteworthy in light of PTP’s sustained performance of handling over one million TEUs for three consecutive months since May this year.”
“Our journey has not been without its challenges, but it is precisely these trials that have shaped our resilience and determination. The foundation of our success lies in PTP’s unwavering focus on our people, technology and processes, with safety as our core value and our customers at the heart of everything we do.”
Mark Hardiman also shared his gratitude, stating, “None of this would be possible without the support of our customers, shareholders, and, most importantly, our dedicated staff who should take pride in what they have achieved.”
Recently, PTP was honoured as the winner of this year’s Industry Excellence Award (AKI) for the Services Sector in Category 4 and clinched the fifth British Malaysia Chamber of Commerce (BMCC) Business Excellence Award under the Outstanding ESG category. Additionally, PTP achieved the prestigious recognition of being ranked as the fifth most efficient container port in the world by The World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence in the latest Container Port Performance Index 2023.
