PORT KLANG, 15 May 2023 – Northport (Malaysia) Bhd (“Northport”), a member of MMC Group, recently hosted its annual Hari Raya Open House on Friday, 12 May 2023. The event, which was held at Northport’s premises in Port Klang, was attended by almost 3,000 guests, including customers, business partners, Government Agencies, community leaders, Northport staff and other stakeholders.

This year’s event, themed “Hijaukan Syawal Anda”, was organized with the aim to highlight the importance of ESG (Environment, Social & Governance) practices in modern-day business activities. Throughout the event, guests were treated to various ESG-themed activities and showcases, including the showcase of electric motorcycles, food waste digesters, eco-friendly electrical appliances, and displays of Northport’s ESG initiatives. In addition, the use of eco-friendly materials by the food and beverage vendors was required by Northport, and recycling bins were placed around the event venue to encourage waste reduction and recycling.

“Our “Hijaukan Syawal Anda” Hari Raya Open House 2023 event is a testament of Northport’s commitment to ESG practices and our responsibility as a corporate citizen. We are delighted to be able to showcase our efforts in promoting sustainability and celebrating cultural diversity through this event,” said Dato’ Azman Shah Mohd Yusof, Chief Executive Officer of Northport.

For the event, Northport set a target to achieve a zero waste KPI (Key Performance Indicator) by implementing sustainable practices, including donating excess food to charity and using a food waste digester to convert waste into compost.

The event featured 15 food stalls serving 25 menu items, which were managed and decorated by Northport employees. The stalls were judged in a competition for the “best stall” award where the employees were encouraged to showcase their creativity, not only for their visual appeal but also for their adherence to the ESG theme. In addition, there were also “best-dressed” and Hari Raya video competitions organized with an ESG twist. These competitions added an extra layer of excitement and engagement to the event, and underscored Northport’s commitment to promoting sustainable and responsible practices across all aspects of its operations.

Meanwhile, Northport’s employees from different work backgrounds, formed a band that provided a lively atmosphere for the guests. The band played ESG and Hari Raya-themed songs throughout the event, adding to the festive atmosphere. Students from Sekolah Kebangsaan Pelabuhan Utara, Port Klang, were also invited to perform traditional dances during the event.

“We hope that our ‘Hijaukan Syawal Anda’ Hari Raya Open House 2023 has brought joy and inspiration to all our employees and guests. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to everyone who helped make this event a success. As we move forward, let us continue to work together towards a sustainable future for all, and may this celebration of Hari Raya and ESG initiatives bring us closer as a community,” said Dato’ Azman.

Northport’s ESG-themed Hari Raya event was a great success, achieving the company’s primary objective of increasing awareness among its employees, stakeholders, and the surrounding communities. The event emphasized the company’s commitment to being a responsible corporate citizen and the importance of incorporating ESG practices into its business operations.

Over the past few years, Northport has taken on a range of ESG initiatives that demonstrate its commitment to sustainability and social responsibility as a fundamental aspect of its business operations. Some of the significant initiatives include the use of Electrified Rubber Tired Gantry (“E-RTG”) cranes for its container handling operations, making Northport the first port in Malaysia to utilize environmentally friendly terminal handling equipment. Northport is also the first port in Malaysia to establish an on-site Port Reception Facility (PRF), providing a value-added service for total waste management solutions to the berthing ships. Additionally, Northport is the first Malaysian port to install solar panels on its warehouse rooftop.

Other initiatives include the company’s annual 3R campaign to raise awareness of conserving the environment among Northport employees. The 3R program has successfully collected more than 194 tonnes of recyclable items worth RM67,877.00 since its launch in 2018.

As part of Northport’s commitment to promoting gender diversity and equity throughout its organization, Northport is pleased to report that 40% of its senior management positions are held by women. The company has also taken proactive steps to increase female representation in operational roles. To date, Northport has employed 14 women in various key operational positions, including marine pilots, RTG operators, gate clerks, and prime mover drivers.

To strengthen Northport’s commitment towards good governance, the company has initiated programs to promote the culture of integrity among its employees. The programs include engagement sessions to educate and instill awareness of integrityrelated best practices. In 2020, Northport became the first port in Malaysia to be certified with ISO 37001:2016 Anti-Bribery Management System (ABMS). In January of this year, Northport was announced as the Gold Award winner of the Integrity, Governance, and Anti-Corruption Awards (“AIGA”) 2022. AIGA is awarded to deserving public and private sector organizations in recognition of their exceptional commitment to cultivating the best integrity and governance as well as anticorruption initiatives within the organizations.
