PORT KLANG, 4 September 2024 – Northport (Malaysia) Bhd (“Northport”), a member of MMC Group, has achieved another milestone by breaking its monthly container and conventional cargo throughput records for the second consecutive month.
In August 2024, Northport handled a total of 365,558 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) of containers, the Company’s highest ever monthly container throughput, surpassing the previous record of 354,548 TEUs set just a month earlier. The Company also broke its conventional cargo monthly record with the handling of 1,145,021 FWTs (Freight Weight Tonnes), surpassing the previous record of 1,143,318 FWTs also set in July 2024.
Dato’ Azman Shah Mohd Yusof, Chief Executive Officer of Northport, said, “Our consistent record-breaking performance month after month is a clear reflection of Northport’s expanding capacity and enhanced efficiency in managing increasing cargo volumes. This achievement highlights our resilience and agility in responding to global challenges and the shifting dynamics of international trade. By continuously upgrading our infrastructure and services, we have solidified Northport’s role as a crucial gateway for global shipping, capable of meeting the evolving needs of our customers in an ever-changing market.”
Northport’s double record-breaking performance in August 2024 is the result of several key factors. These include a significant increase in ad-hoc vessel arrivals. From January to August 2024, Northport received a total of 171 ad-hoc calls. Besides the increase in ad-hoc calls, Northport has also successfully attracted several new shipping services to its terminal. These new service routes have expanded Northport’s network, allowing for a greater volume of shipments to pass through the port. From January to August 2024, Northport registered a total of 13 new services calling at its port.
Driving these external factors is Northport’s unwavering commitment to operational excellence, demonstrated through ongoing investments in infrastructure improvements and the continuous refinement of operational processes. The new container yard, Block K, has been partially operational and significantly contributed to the higher volume in August. The yard is expected to be fully completed in September 2024.
“Above all these factors, our employees’ unwavering commitment and relentless pursuit of excellence have been instrumental in driving Northport’s record-breaking performances. This latest achievement has set Northport on a strong trajectory to potentially surpass our all-time high annual container and conventional cargo handling records by the end of this year. We hope that this record throughput will significantly contribute to our efforts in securing Port Klang’s position among the top 10 busiest ports in the world in 2024,” added Dato’ Azman.
The Minister of Transport Malaysia, YB Anthony Loke Siew Fook, during his visit to Northport on 27 August 2024, said that Port Klang, comprising Northport and Westports, is currently ranked 11th in Lloyd’s List’s top 100 global ports for 2023, up from 13th in 2022. The Minister further stated that Port Klang is on track to secure a spot in the top 10 of the world’s busiest container ports for 2024.
“As we continue to break records, our focus remains on sustainable growth. Northport is not just keeping pace with global trends. We are setting new benchmarks in operational efficiency and service excellence. Our strategic investments in infrastructure and technology are designed to ensure that we not only meet but exceed the expectations of our customers, partners and stakeholders, positioning Northport as Malaysia’s preferred gateway port,” concluded Dato’ Azman.
