MALAYSIA’S FIRST LNG BUNKERING EXERCISE FOR CONTAINER VESSEL CONDUCTED SUCCESSFULLY AT PORT OF TANJUNG PELEPAS

On 21 March 2024, Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), a member of MMC Group announced another significant milestone with the successful completion of Malaysia’s first Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) bunkering operation involving a container vessel. The pioneering landmark event involved MSC Sofia, which received LNG fuel during a port call.

MSC Sofia is a container carrier operated by Switzerland-based shipping giant, Mediterranean Shipping Company.

This milestone event marks a significant step forward in PTP’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. LNG is a cleaner-burning fuel compared to traditional marine fuels, emitting significantly less sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter. By adopting LNG bunkering, PTP and its partners are contributing to cleaner air and a more sustainable maritime industry.

The successful completion of this LNG bunkering operation is a pivotal moment for PTP. From a business perspective, it demonstrates the port’s world-class capabilities in handling complex container vessel LNG bunkering. This is vital to attracting further business and solidifying PTP’s position as a leading regional maritime hub.
