KONTENA NASIONAL BERHAD EXPANDS ITS FLEET WITH THE ADDITION OF 30 NEW PRIME MOVERS

Kontena Nasional Berhad received 30 units of Volvo’s FM440 6×2 T RAS prime movers from Volvo Trucks Malaysia in a fleet expansion and modernisation move.

JOHOR BAHRU, 16 December 2019 – Johor Port Berhad (JPB), a Member of MMC Group achieved another milestone by handling a record Container volume of 1.0 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit (“TEU”) of Containers in 2019, an improvement of 10.5% over the previous year’s volume of 0.9 million TEUs, which was also a record volume then.

A celebration ceremony held today to mark the achievement was officiated by YB Tuan Loke Siew Fook, Minister of Transport Malaysia. The event was attended by approximately 300 guests from the Port Authority, various Government Agencies, shipping lines and cargo owners. YB Tuan Loke Siew Fook in his speech praised Johor Port for taking proactive measures to overcome its various constraints over the years especially in terms of navigational constraint and has since grown to become the Premier Southern Gateway Multi-Purpose Port in Malaysia.

“Johor Port is already designated as an approved delivery point under some international commodity exchanges such as LME, CME/KLCE and APEX. as a full-fledged multipurpose port and with its wide shipping connectivity, I would also encourage Johor Port to develop as a trading centre and cargo transhipment hub. It should be a natural progression for Johor Port to be a regional cargo hub, leveraging on its strategic location being within 2.5 hours from the commodities market. Developing Malaysian ports into RDCS is also the aspiration of the government. It is towards this end that I have taken the initiative to waive the A.P requirement for some of the soft commodities entering and transiting in our free zone ports.” he added.

“We are honored to host today’s 1 Million TEUs Milestone Event which marks the very first time that Johor Port has handled more than 1,000,000 TEUs of Containers ever since we started our Container Terminal operations back in 1993. This achievement can be attributed to several key factors which include overall improvement in the Container handling productivity and Equipment reliability such as the 94% effective Berth Utilisation rate and the 98% Truck Turnaround Time of below 60 minutes; and better communications and information sharing with our customers individually or through associations like SAM (Shipping Association Malaysia), JOFFA (Johor Freight Forwarders Association), JPSFA (Johor Port Shipping & Forwarding Association) and AMH (Association of Malaysian Hauliers).” said YBhg Dato’ Sri Che Khalib bin Mohamad Noh, Chairman of Johor Port Berhad and Group Managing Director of MMC Corporation Berhad.

Since its establishment in 1977, Johor Port has facilitated the export-led economic growth of the more than 28 industrial areas in Johor State by providing world-class Container Terminal services to the Container shipping industry and the Export/Import community in Pasir Gudang, Tanjung Langsat and surrounding hinterland including Singapore and nearby Indonesian islands.

Johor Port has also contributed to Johor’s position as an important Gateway in the Southern region and a key Logistics Hub within the intra-Asia region.

Johor Port will continue striving to transform and propel the Port to even greater heights, and to build a resilient culture that will stand the test of time. In this year alone, Johor Port had managed to secure 3 international awards which include

• The “APQO Innovation Class Award (STAR)” from the Asia Pacific Quality Organization (APQO);

• The “Global Business Leadership Awards 2019” for Excellence in Port Facilities Management from the Asia Pacific Business Council for Sustainability and Institute of Sustainability; and

• For “Excellence in Ports and Terminal Training/Education” from Global Ports Forum Awards.

Moving forward, Johor Port has put in place a Port Re-Development Plan to further improve the performance of its Terminals including various Productivity Improvement and Equipment Upgrading initiatives and will continue to invest to ensure that the Port becomes even more efficient in order to meet the needs of its customers and that Johor Port remain as the Premier Southern Gateway Multi-Purpose Port.
