JOHOR BAHRU, 5 March 2025 – Johor Port Berhad (Johor Port), a member of MMC Group, launched its Sustainability Framework & Roadmap at an event held at the Grand Florius Ballroom of the Opero Hotel, Johor Bahru on 25 February 2025. The event, themed “Anchoring Sustainability for a Better Tomorrow,” was organised to demonstrate Johor Port’s dedication to integrating sustainability into its core business strategies and brought together key stakeholders, industry experts and representatives from Government Agencies to reaffirm Johor Port’s commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable practices.
The launch of the Johor Port Berhad Sustainability Framework & Roadmap was witnessed by a panel of distinguished guests, including YBhg Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed, MMC Corporation Berhad’s Anti-Bribery & Anti-Corruption (ABAC) Advisor and former Chief Commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), YBrs Assistant Commissioner Tuan Koo Lik Chi, Head of Governance Investigation for MACC Johor and Ts. Arzanizam Mohammad, Senior Corporate Manager of Johor Port Authority.
The event commenced with a special message from the CEO of Johor Port Berhad, Md Derick Basir, who emphasised the importance of sustainability in Johor Port’s longterm growth and success. In his message, Md Derick Basir highlighted that Johor Port was celebrating a major milestone: the completion of Johor Port Berhad’s Sustainability Framework and Roadmap. He then elaborated on the significant strides made in environmental performance, noting that Johor Port has successfully reduced its carbon footprint, expanded the use of cleaner Biodiesel, and electrified its internal mobility fleet of motorcycles. Furthermore, the Company has transitioned to LED lighting and implemented a 2.1 megawatt-peak solar system which now powers 12% of Johor Port’s energy needs. This progress brings Johor Port closer to achieving 15% renewable energy by 2030, with ongoing efforts directed towards a 30% target of carbon emission reduction by the same year. Md Derick Basir also outlined Johor Port’s commitment to social responsibility, stating the Company’s target to achieve 30% female representation in Management by 2030, and to maintain a Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) of below 0.60 as an assurance for workplace safety. Md Derick Basir concluded his message by highlighting Johor Port’s achievement in obtaining the ISO 37001:2016 Anti-Bribery Management System certification in 2024, demonstrating the Company’s zero tolerance towards corruption.
A key highlight of the event was the participation of two young students from SK Bandar Seri Alam, Wan Muhamad Shahputra Wan Saiful Bahri and Nuraisyah Soffiya Noor Azzali, who presented a poem and symbolically handed over a terrarium to K C Low, Head of Corporate Affairs Division of Johor Port Berhad. This collaboration with SK Bandar Seri Alam provided an opportunity for the students to share their message of sustainability through a poem, showcasing their talents and fostering a deeper understanding of environmental responsibility among young learners. While their involvement was purely for educational enrichment and to showcase their abilities, their participation underscored Johor Port’s commitment to fostering environmental awareness among the younger generation and engaging with the local community.
Following the official launch of the Johor Port Berhad’s Sustainability Framework & Roadmap, K C Low, on behalf of the CEO, participated in an Integrity Pledge Signing ceremony, witnessed by Assistant Commissioner Tuan Koo Lik Chi, further solidifying Johor Port’s commitment to ethical practices.
The event also featured insightful presentations by industry experts, including Assistant Commissioner Tuan Koo Lik Chi from MACC Johor on “Section 17A Corporate Liability” and YBhg Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed on “How to Say No to Corruption.” Tan Sri Abu Kassim’s presentation provided valuable insights into the strategies and principles for resisting corrupt practices, emphasising the importance of ethical leadership and fostering a culture of integrity within organisations. These presentations provided valuable insights into anti-bribery measures and the importance of integrity in achieving sustainable development. Guests also participated in an interactive online quiz, designed to reinforce key takeaways from the event, with five winners recognised for their accurate and timely responses.
The “Anchoring Sustainability for a Better Tomorrow” event reflects Johor Port’s unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship, social responsibility and good governance while the newly launched Sustainability Framework & Roadmap outlines Johor Port’s strategic priorities and action plans to minimise its environmental impact, promote ethical business practices and contribute positively to the communities it operates in.
